Begin by listening

I begin by listening and asking questions; questions have always been essential in my work as radio producer, writer, coach, facilitator, and leader of creative teams.  Each project begins with an effort to uncover the questions and challenges that individuals and teams need to address.  The ideas we discover together in this phase of questioning and listening become the foundation of each project, whether we are creating a podcast, workshop, or live event.

Over many years of creating and leading weekly radio programs, I have become adept at leading in what the military calls a VUCA environment -- an atmosphere charged with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.  These can be seen as negatives, yet in creative pursuits, they help us feel our way to new ideas.

The poet John Keats once described Shakespeare's genius as his ability to live with "uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason."  A major element of my current work is helping people and companies expand their capacity for uncertainty, to learn how to play with ideas that are both complex and ambiguous in order to create something new.

This work isn't for everyone.  It can be challenging, hands-on, and—like entry into any new space--exciting, maybe even unsettling at times.  If you chose to work with me, what I can guarantee is we will create a space together in which we can see new aspects of familiar stories, embrace the challenges we face in our work, chose constraints that allow us to more easily express our ideas, be part of a community that offers support as we grapple with failure and celebrate new ideas, open up to experimentation and play, and develop teams of colleagues who are also eager to lift their work to a new level.
